21 Sep Windom Elementary receives grant for greenhouse
The McPherson County Community Foundation Board of Directors and Grants Committee recently approved a $5,000 grant to assist USD 444, Windom in the purchase of a greenhouse to be erected by the elementary school. Windom Elementary K-5 students will “dig into learning” by applying science and match skills through gardening projects in a greenhouse setting using a project-based learning mode. The WES Greenhouse will be a true community project with involvement from K-12 students and staff, patrons and community organizations in Windom, Marquette and Little River.
Once in place, Windom Elementary will be one of only a few elementary schools in the state to have a full functioning, curriculum-based greenhouse. A Monsanto grant was also received to assist with the project.
Foundation board members Terri Bornholdt, Bill Gately and Andrew Rush participated in the groundbreaking ceremony on September 16. Construction is planned for October with a projected completion in late November.
