David J. Nutt Fund ‘Legacy’ Grant recipients announced

The David J. Nutt Fund, administered by the McPherson County Community Foundation, has announced recipients for its annual Legacy grant round. In 2025, the fund will distribute $232,375 to three Lindsborg-area organizations.

Legacy grants are designed to create long-term impact in the Lindsborg community by funding projects that organizations might not otherwise afford. Applications are reviewed by the fund’s grant committee, which also considers input from a community survey to guide funding decisions.

2025 Legacy Grant Recipients:

USD 400 – Little Vikings Gym Renovation – $97,540

This project will replace the original gym floor, installed in 1986, with a new wooden floor and protective matting. After 38 years of wear and tear, the current surface presents safety concerns such as unevenness and poor shock absorption. These issues affect student safety and limit the gym’s use for physical education, extracurriculars, and community events.

The renovation will create a safer, more versatile space for students and the community. The gym hosts youth sports leagues, school fundraisers, and other local events. A modernized facility will enhance these programs and serve as a welcoming space for physical and social development.

Bethany Home Association – Securing Comfort: Enhancing Care for Residents with Alzheimer’s and Dementia – $99,835

This project will install a magnetic locking door security system at Sunflower Terrace to improve safety for residents with memory impairments. The upgrade reduces risks and supports residents in staying in familiar surroundings longer, helping to delay or avoid moves to more intensive care settings. Families will also benefit from increased peace of mind, and the facility will expand its capacity to serve those with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Lindsborg Childcare Development Center – Playground and Bathroom Expansion – $35,000

This project includes adding a bathroom to the activity room, which will allow the space to be licensed for classroom use. Additionally, the center will install fencing to expand its licensed playground for older children. Both improvements meet state requirements and address community demand for childcare services.

About the David J. Nutt Fund

The fund was established in 2017 with a $7.5 million gift from the estate of David J. Nutt, a former Lindsborg resident who credited the community with shaping his life. His endowment created a permanent resource to support organizations working to improve the lives of Lindsborg residents.

The first round of grants was awarded in 2018, with $25,000 going to 12 organizations. Since then, the fund’s impact has steadily grown. In 2019, it awarded $205,500 in grants. In 2024, the fund awarded $414,168, pushing its total giving past $2 million.

The David J. Nutt Fund continues to show the lasting power of endowments and generosity. Thanks to David Nutt’s gift, Lindsborg is forever changed for the better.
